|The use of regular grid cells as carrier of semantic information is an established method for presenting and analyzing statistic issues. Due to the equal distribution and uniform size of the grid cells, statistical issues can be evaluated time-stably and comparably.
The European initiative for establishing a spatial data infrastructure INSPIRE defines in the document Data Specification on Geographical Grid Systems – Technical Guidelines Europe-wide uniform Geographical grids. The Geographical Grids of Germany are based on this specification.
The grids are provided in quadratic cell sizes of 100 m, 250 m, 500 m, 1 km, 5 km, 10 km and 100 km.
On request of several federal institutions, the grid cells have attributes with the percentage of state, land and water areas. In addition, the grids with the resolutions 100 m and 250 m show the Official Municipality Key (AGS) of the municipality predominating in terms of the area covered.

|Provisions of use|
|The geodata offered here are available via geodata services for download and for online use free of charge according to the Spatial Data Access Act (Geodatenzugangsgesetz).
The use of the geodata and geodata services is regulated by the Ordinance to Determine the Conditions for Use for the Provision of Spatial Data of the Federation (Verordnung zur Festlegung der Nutzungsbestimmungen für die Bereitstellung von Geodaten des Bundes – GeoNutzV).
|Especially, each user has to place the source reference to all geodata, metadata and geodata services recognisably and optically linked. Alterations, processings, new designs or other adaptations have to be affixed with an indication of the alteration in the source reference.|
|Source reference and indication of alteration have to be formulated as follows. The source reference has to be linked with the URL "http://www.bkg.bund.de" for the representation at a website.|
